Joe grew up in Dallas, Texas. He attended Booger T Washington High School in Dallas, Texas. After high school he joined the Army in 1953 and served for 2 years. He was discharged in 1955, achieving the rank of E-4 Specialist. After his military service he began work for Humphreys & Partners Architects as a Maintenance Technician.
