OBITUARY
Johnnie May Gipson, age 76, passed away on April 17, 2024. The eldest of nine children, she was born on June 16,1947, in Gladewater, Texas, to John Ruben and Verdell Gipson. Johnnie May was blessed to have many roles as a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend.
After graduating from Weldon High School in 1965, she moved to Dallas where she attended Draughon Business College. She worked for several years at Southwestern Bell before becoming Dr. Eugene Dorsey’s Medical Administrator for 20 years at Forest Avenue Hospital. After living in Texas all her life, she moved to Palm Bay, FL, in 2019 where she lived her last years to the fullest.
Johnnie May was a member of Piedmont Church of Christ before she moved to Dallas and later united with Believer's Hope Family Church under the late Pastor Harold Willis. 1 Chronicles 16:11 commands us to "Seek the Lord and His strength; seek his presence continually. While her illness sometimes prevented her from attending Sunday church, worship was a continual spirit in Johnnie May's daily life as she faithfully sought to exalt God in her heart and soul. There's nothing she enjoyed more than listening and singing along to the Mississippi Mass Choir.
Feisty right up to the end, she loved a little competition over a game of dominoes, bingo, or a card game. She equally loved being in front of a good Hallmark series or Perry Mason movie. But what she loved the most was the fellowship among family and friends enjoying her most favorite meals. She’d be the first one to say that she could eat anything…especially seafood.
Johnnie May was preceded in death by her parents and sister Brenda Kay. She is survived by her children: son, Michael (Bernie) Gipson; daughters, Nikesha and Kimberly Gipson; grandchildren: Michelle, Troy, Ciona, Michael, Jr., Michaela and Malachi; great grandchildren: Rashad and Rahmir; sisters: Bobbie Gipson, Joann Ford, Linda (Michael) Robertson, Ruby Cox, and Gwendolyn Randolph; and brothers: HB Qualls, Reginald (Mina) Qualls and John Gipson, Jr.
