Eunice Calhoun

July 14, 1940 — August 19, 2012

Eunice Marie Calhoun was the second child of Samuel Griffin Edwards and Elzie Lee Dixon born on July 14, 1940, Idabel, Oklahoma.  Eunice and her siblings grew up on a farm where she worked in the cotton fields, attended gardens, picked up pecans and milked cows.  She attended a one-room school in Galilee Community for the first 4 years.  Then she went to Slater Elementary Grade School and after graduating from elementary school she attended Booker T. Washington in Idabel for her high school years.  Eunice was very popular in high school.  She was a great dancer and won several dance contests.

After high school she left Idabel and came to Dallas, TX, where she spent the last fifty-four years of her life.  She worked at several jobs when she first came to Dallas.  While she was working at Autumn Leaves Cafeteria she met, fell in love and married Tarzen (Sonny) Calhoun.  She had one child Robert Calhoun.  However she was instrumental in raising a whole host of nieces and nephews.  The following is a few of the people who she raised or kept for a prolong period of time: Billie Logan and her two children Chamaine Logan and Chester (Chopper) Logan; Rozetta and her two children Tiffany Johnston, Eddie Finley; Diane Harris and two of her children, Kiochsa Tyson and Tiandra Tyson; and Curtis Johnston. Just name a few.

Eunice was born again in the mid-seventies while attending Greater El Bethel under the leadership of Dr CC McNealy.  She was filled with Holy Spirit at Souls Harbor Church under the leadership of W V Grant Sr.  She had a great voice and loved to sing for the Lord.  The last 20 years of her life she was a faithful member of A House of Deliverance under the leadership of Pastor Ebbie Thomas.  There she continued to serve the Lord in song, as Financial Secretary, Praise and Worship Leader and Testimony Service leader.

Eunice and her husband Sonny owned and operated "Calhoun's Cleaners" on Dentley Drive and later moved to Ann Arbor Avenue.  She was an excellent seamstress and did alterations.  People came from far and near to have her do their alterations.  The cleaner was not only a place of business, but for Eunice it was a ministry.  It was obvious to everyone who came into the cleaners that she loved God and people.   She would witness and testify to them because she considered it her life's mission to tell them about the love of Christ.  She witness to the people in her neighborhood and would promise (bribed) them with a meal if they came to Church with her.

Eunice entered the heavenly gates on Sunday, August 19, 2012 and leaves the following to celebrate her legacy:  Son Robert Calhoun (wife-Jenice); 4 grandchildren, Antwanette (husband-Dominique Craft), Lateisha, Lakeisha and Robert Jr; two great grandchildren, Raegan and Dominique Craft Jr.; two siblings, Lawrence Edwards and Bobbye Gorden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
