Hazel Mae Johnson

July 31, 1938 ~ October 21, 2019 (age 81)

Obituary

Evangelist Hazel Johnson was born on July 31, 1938, in Dallas Texas. Her parents were James Thomas and Elizabeth Cannon who preceded her in death. Also preceded her in death (brother) Robert Rose, (son)Jimmy Lee Johnson, Jr., (daughter) Debra Lynn Johnson Moore and her beloved husband of 59 years Jimmie Lee Johnson, Sr.

She received her education in Dallas, Texas, where she attended Booker T. Washington High School. She was employed with Parkland hospital until retirement.

Missionary Johnson transformed her life along with her husband and as a team, they began to serve God together under Supt. Joe Turner at Mt. Zion C.O.G.I.C as they raised their children. Missionary Johnson also served as an International Usher for the Church of God in Christ, as the Lead Usher for the Texas Southeast 3rd District under the late Bishop C.L. Bryant.

Missionary Johnson loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and a great-grandmother. She had a willingness to help her family and was always there to take in her loved ones when needed.

Hazel served as a first lady with her husband at Shield of Faith C.O.G.I.C. In her role as the first lady, she led many of her children, grandchildren, and others to Christ. Missionary Johnson was the co-founder of “God’s Last Word Outreach Ministry”.

She was known to her grandchildren as Big Mama, (although small in stature) and to the church she was known as Sweet & Low (and that she was sweet indeed.) Complaining was never her forte, even during her darkest hours. Sweet potato pie was her specialty. She leaves behind to cherish her memory two daughters, Loretta Johnson Harris (Reginald) and DeAnna Cooper; three sons, Kenneth Johnson, Bertram Johnson (April), and Stanley Johnson (Gloria); step-son, Douglas Daughtry; sister, Mary Delley; brother and sister she raised as her own, Barbara Moore and Burt Ladell Rose; twenty-six grandchildren; sixty-two great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, in-laws and a host of friends.
